BandAvvEndovenous laser treatment of varicose veins is a new and exciting development which I feel will replace surgery in the vast majority of cases. The procedure can be performed as an outpatient in a day surgery centre.  Under local anaesthetic, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the abnormal vein delivering laser energy as the fiber is slowly withdrawn from the body. This laser energy closes the vein thereby stopping the abnormal back-flow of blood down the diseased vein to form varicose veins. The veins can then be removed under local anaesthetic via tiny incisions. Your body will naturally use the many other healthy veins to return blood from the leg to the heart. The procedure takes about 20-40 minutes. The leg is then placed in a compression bandage or stocking which stays on for 2 weeks . You should experience minimal discomfort during the procedure.  Some patients return to normal activity the next day.

We believe this procedure has advantages over the old surgical technique of junctional ligation and vein stripping:

  1. Quicker and easier to perform
  2. As this procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic, NO general anaesthetic is required
  3. Less pain and discomfort
  4. Performed as a day procedure. You can walk home soon after the procedure
  5. No groin wound to heal
  6. Much quicker return to normal activities and return to work
  7. Immediate relief from painful and unsightly leg veins
  8. The size of the veins does not matter as the majority of patients with large varicose veins can be treated by this technique. As the procedure is relatively new, long term results are not available however the early results have been encouraging and suggest equal or better results to that obtained with surgery.

The disadvantages of the procedure are few. The main problem with offering this technique to patients is the cost of the procedure.  The disposable laser fiber and associated equipment is expensive, as is the purchase cost of the laser machine.  For information contact our office.
